With 1996's Scream, then fledgeling screenwriter Kevin Williamson delivered a script that spoke directly to the hearts of horror enthusiasts. More than that, the film reached beyond the confines of a built-in fanbase and infused the genre with a renewed sense of energy and play. Scream stands as the highest grossing slasher film in the United States. Calling out the tropes and "rules of the game" put horror writers and directors on notice, in essence, challenging them to find ways to break the "rules", create new ones, or find an interesting way to tell a well trod tale. Scream, more than anything, was simply an intensely good time at the theater.
