CES: Nvidia Reveals Tegra 4, "The World's Fastest Mobile Processor"

At a press conference tonight in Las Vegas, Nvidia took the wraps off of the successor to its Tegra 3 mobile processor, which is currently found in devices like Google's Nexus 7, the Ouya, and countless other smartphones and tablets. According to Nvidia, the Tegra 4 boasts six times the graphics performance of the Tegra 3, provided by 72 graphics-dedicated cores — six times the number of cores found on the Tegra 3. The SOC (system on a chip) will maintain the Tegra 3's "four-plus-one" quad-core design.

The chip can allegedly fuel resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 and 1080p at 120Hz. Unlike it's predecessor, the Tegra 4 supports 4G LTE connectivity — a huge limitation for Tegra 3-powered smartphones and tablets. It's also the world's first quad-core chip to use ARM's new Cortex A15 architecture. Nvidia says that the Tegra 4 is the fastest mobile processor in the world, trumping Apple's A6X processor, which is currently found in the fourth-generation iPad.
