Astonishing X-Men #58 Review

Warbird proved to be a great new addition to the X-Men lineup as Jason Aaron began to shed more light on her in the pages of Wolverine and the X-Men. The problem is that the series has been too crowded and too swept up in the chaos of AvX to allow much time for the former bodyguard and would-be artist. But that's where Astonishing X-Men comes in. This series has become a platform for a handful of under-appreciated X-Men to shine, and right now it's Warbird's turn.

Continuing from issue #57, Warbird is hell-bent on ensuring that her Fianden nemesis doesn't use the doomsday weapon he stole and restore to life a great enemy of the Shi'ar Empire. But as this lone Fianden survivor is clearly not the villain he's made out to be, Warbird's struggle becomes more about reconciling her inner creative desires with her ingrained sense of honor and duty. This short arc proves to be a worthwhile characters study that expands on the groundwork Aaron laid last year. In a week where too many books have left me complaining about pointless or awkward narration, the narration here is intelligent, thoughtful, and serves the emotional weight of the script.
