Justice League of America enjoyed a much stronger debut than Justice League did back in 2011. And fortunately, none of that momentum is lost in the second issue. That's despite the fact that the book has such a slow, languid pace right now. Usually a slow pace is the last thing readers want to see when debuting a superhero team book. But that approach has a purpose, as Geoff Johns methodically digs into the minds and personalities of his various characters. And with a cast comprised of so many characters who haven't fared so well in the New 52, this sort of treatment is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Issue #2 brings the majority of the team together in the same room for the first time. Simon Baz is strangely absent. For whatever reason Johns seems intent on having this series run concurrently with the Green Lantern books but not necessarily with titles like Catwoman or Green Arrow. However, later developments lightly hint that Simon may be kept off the table for a reason. In any case, readers have their first opportunity to see these characters play off one another and start building a larger team dynamic. That leads to some standout comedic scenes, such as the uncomfortable first encounter between Hawkman and Vibe. Stargirl immediately stands out as the moral center of the team. It's good to see her finally appear in the New 52 universe, fundamentally unchanged from how Johns has always portrayed her. Johns even manages to offer a more human take on Amanda Waller for once, without downplaying her ruthless side.
