Was 1996 the Best Year Ever For Gaming?

A survey by UK retailer GAME has turned up a few interesting results: the votes turned up 1996 at the best year ever for gaming, and the Wii as the best-ever console.

1996 was the year of the original Tomb Raider, of Resident Evil and of Super Mario 64 (if you lived in Japan, anyway - we didn't get it in Europe until 1997. The original Pokemon games also launched in Japan in 1996). Duke Nukem 3D, Crash Bandicoot and Diablo also entered our lives that year.

The runner-up was 2002, the year that Metroid Prime, Splinter Cell, Smash Bros: Melee and GTA: Vice City. 1991 was in third place, with 1985 and 1980 in fourth and fifth.

The survey sampled 2,000 British gamers, who also voted the Wii as the best console of all time ahead of the PS3 and 360 (though we'd be interested to know what other options were included in that particular poll - the PS2 and Dreamcast still give all of them a run for the money if you ask us).
