Green Lantern Animated: Ranx Review

We've come now to the penultimate chapter of Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Like "Loss" and "Cold Fury" a few weeks back, "Ranx" and next week's "Dark Matter" form a loose sort of two-part storyline. Getting blasted across the universe last time barely slowed Aya down, and now she and her Manhunters have begun the final stages of her plan to eliminate all life in the universe. That plan, as it turned out, involves the Sentient City of Ranx and the return of another familiar face.

Continuing a recent trend where it seems like every deceased character on the show turns out to still be alive, the Anti-Monitor was revealed to have survived having his head ripped from his body and said body being taken over by Aya. It was an unexpected and welcome reveal to see him as the secret source of the distress signal. The Anti-Monitor is not a villain I've ever particularly cared about in the comics or this show. He's a pretty faceless villain lacking in personality or motivation other than that basic desire to annihilate all existence. This episode actually offered some semblance of personality as we saw the Anti-Monitor driven by fear and willing to strike a bargain with whomever would save him from certain destruction. That said, I would have hated the thought of our three heroes forming an alliance with the villain, so it was just as well that Aya showed up to finish him off permanently.
