When I played Atelier Totori, I felt like I was seeing a franchise on the cusp of greatness. The combat was breezy and enjoyable, the item crafting was dizzyingly deep, and the primary conflict, while small in scale, was personal and relatable. With a few system tweaks and better writing, it could have been a bonafide hit. Atelier Ayesha is now Gust's second attempt to build on the successes of Totori, and while the core elements are all still in place, Ayesha makes a number of subtle, yet significant departures that end up doing a bit more harm than good. There's still enough here to please fans of the series, but anyone expecting it to match or surpass the "Arland Trilogy" may be disappointed.
