Windows 8.1 Reportedly Launching October

Microsoft is expected to begin rolling out Windows 8.1 to consumers as early as October, according to reports by ZDNet and The Verge. A preview of the first major update to operating system has been available since June, and Microsoft is said to be now testing near-final versions of new OS.

The company previously stated that it would provide hardware partners with the final build of the update — otherwise known as the Release to Manufacturing, or RTM, build — by the end of August, and it appears that Microsoft is still on track to reach that goal. The time between the RTM rollout and the general launch of Windows 8.1 will let OEMs manage their own testing and appropriatly update drivers before customers get their hands on the update. The public launch of Windows 8.1 will reportedly go alongside the release of new 7- and 8-inch devices, which have been rumored for quite some time now.
