Giving Sony its first No. 1 debut since Evil Dead this past spring, director Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi action film Elysium opened atop the domestic weekend box office with an estimated $30.5 million, a modest bow slightly under the studio's predictions.
Elysium, driven by the star power of Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, opened to less than what Blomkamp's previous film, the starless District 9, did ($37.4 million).
