If any pop culture concept is more played out than superheroes at the moment, it has to be vampires. Franchises like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and True Blood/The Southern Vampire Mysteries have given many people total vampire apathy. Even in comics, a vampire-centric series really needs a strong, original hook if it's going to have a chance of succeeding. Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque managed that when they debuted American Vampire. And it could be argued that Marvel's recent, short-lived Morbius series failed for that same reason. Despite vampire apathy, BOOM! Studios have launched a vampire-heavy comic of their own. While Day Men doesn't really rival American Vampire in terms of quality yet, it has just enough of a hook to stand out from the pack and appeal to jaded horror fans.
