I wasn't wild about last week's Avengers Assemble episode and its dull, formulaic "rookie saves the day" formula. The fact that it completely ignored the running storyline of Red Skull's Cabal didn't help either. Luckily, the writers seemed to know just what to do to win me back over with this week's installment. Namely, framing an episode around two of my favorite Marvel elements - Doctor Doom and Asgardian mythology. The result was easily the strongest episode in Assemble's short lifespan so far.
Probably the best thing that could be said about "The Serpent of Doom" was that it felt very much like an Earth's Mightiest Heroes episode. There was less overt emphasis on team banter and comedy and more on large-scale action. I don't mind the shift towards Whedonesque comedy with this series. The problem is more in the execution. The writers didn't force it as much this time around, so those comedic moments that did crop up (particularly Doom getting squashed mid-boast) worked much better. Falcon was no longer written as the wide-eyed rookie, but a regular, competent member of the team.
