Having made a name for himself with Down Terrace, Kill List and Sightseers, Ben Wheatley has decided to journey down a psychedelic route for his fourth effort, crafting a heady mix of comedy and horror that's as weird and warped as a particularly nasty trip. It also happens to be a rather unique endeavour, the film being the first to ever be released simultaneously in cinemas, on free TV, on DVD and on Video-on-Demand in the U.K.
Set during the English Civil War, A Field in England follows the meagre efforts of the cowardly Whitehead (The League of Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith) to track down a mysterious alchemist called O'Neil.
The film kicks off with Whitehead hiding in a bramble bush, and in endeavouring to save his own skin, he links up with a pair of buffoons in search of ale, and a rather more mysterious figure called Cutler, whose intentions seem shady from the outset.
