Warning: Full spoilers for all seven seasons of Dexter...
After an unexpectedly strong Season 7, and a gruesomely harrowing finale, Showtime's Dexter feels revitalized. It's also currently getting, seven years in, its highest ratings ever. Which isn't completely unheard of for shorter-seasoned cable shows since there are longer gaps in between seasons and less episodes for new viewers to catch up on. So there's a good chance, that if a show has good word-of-mouth, that audiences can grow year over year.
This can also be dangerous, creatively, since networks aren't keen on canceling shows that are doing well, even when a story has passed its expiration date. So Showtime needs to decide if Dexter is just a show about a guy who gets into closed-ended adventures every year, of if there's an overall story that's being told, complete with evolution and ending. As far as we know, Season 8 will be the final year. Nothing's been stated outright by Showtime, but this is what the Dexter writers, and showrunner Scott Buck, have in mind. And it's a big reason why, in Season 7, they were able to burn through story and deliver a lot more drama, intrigue and series-changing moments.
