I'll admit it. Last year, I may have got a little carried away with the festive funtimes (read: free-flowing port) with my review of The
Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe. On reflection, the overwhelming Christmassyness of it all was overcompensating for a pretty flimsy, frivolous
plot.
So it's appropriate that while The Snowmen is the least yuletide-y Christmas special yet, it's also the most energising,
exciting and entertaining episode in yonks.
Sure, Christmas Eve was the backdrop, but all things merry, jolly and warmly endearing were given short thrift, in exchange for a glum Doctor one 'Bah humbug' away from embracing his inner Scrooge, some decidedly kiddy-unfriendly evil snowmen, some surprisingly depressing deaths (nothing says Christmas like a woman drowned in a pond), and an array of marvellous new mainstays.
