Director Judd Apatow describes This Is 40 as a 'sort of sequel' to his 2007 hit Knocked Up. But apart from a few returning characters, This Is 40 stands on its own, less a narrative-driven movie, more a character study of a family trying to hold it together.
Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Pete (Paul Rudd) are (most of the time) happily married, with two daughters - Sadie (Maude Apatow) and Charlotte (Iris Apatow). With both of them turning 40-years-old, Debbie decides it's time for a change, and that with a lot of effort, they can force themselves to be perfectly happy. But over a fairly traumatic three-week period, she realizes the "having it all" ideal may not be possible.
