With an all-new home console just released last month and a new calendar year kicking off just around the corner, right now is the perfect opportunity for us to sit back and take stock of what's coming next for Nintendo. What games might be on the horizon? What sequels to established series are in development right now? Now that we've got our 3DS's and Wii U's all in place, just what can we look forward to playing on them, anyway?

Well, when you're talking Nintendo and looking to the future, it's always best to focus on franchises. Nintendo's business is defined by big brand games – the Marios, the Zeldas, the Pokemons. The company's variety of different properties has even just been celebrated with the release of Nintendo Land, the Wii U launch title that brought together 12 different Nintendo franchises to create a unified virtual theme park. It seems like now, more than ever, Nintendo's keyed in to what works.
