The first 10 or so minutes of Jack Reacher are unbelievably tense. With no dialogue and little music, we see an expert sniper setting up in a parking garage in downtown Pittsburgh, before calmly picking off five random people. In light of recent news events, it's hard not to jump at each gunshot, feel sorrow for every innocent victim, and want to know why the gunman did it after he is captured by police. But then, the dialogue begins, and Jack Reacher falls into a giant chasm of clichés.
After the gunman requests to see a man named Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise), the aforementioned drifter arrives, determined to see justice served. Beautiful lawyer Helen (Rosamund Pike) asks Reacher to help her with the case, much to the annoyance of Sergeant Emerson (David Oyelowo) and Helen's father, the D.A. (Richard Jenkins) who doesn't trust a man without any credit cards, driver's license or home address.
