Sony Pictures Television and Teleset have announced plans to adapt Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi into a television series for the Latin American Market, Deadline reports. The plan is to launch the show as a one-hour drama across the region with 70 produced episodes to start.
Like the original film and its follow-up Desperado, starring Antonio Bandaras, El Mariachi will follow musician Martin Aguirre who, "for love and honor," must go to war with the drug cartels.
"Much like the film, El Mariachi offers audiences a unique blend of high-stakes action and romance," said Angélica Guerra, SPT SVP and managing director, production, Latin America and U.S. Hispanic. "Staying true to the story, we are producing the series in Mexico shooting in magnificent locations and utilizing some of the country's best talent."
