The Legend of Korra: "A New Spiritual Age" Review
Nov 9th 2013, 04:30, by Max Nicholson

Warning: Full spoilers from the episode to follow.

At long last, Korra finally entered the Spirit World! And at longer last, Studio Mir made it's triumphant return -- and not a moment too soon, as this week's "A New Spiritual Age" easily boasted the most impressive visuals we've seen in Book Two thus far (excluding, perhaps, "Beginnings: Parts 1 & 2"). Here, we got our first in-depth look at the Spirit World since Avatar: The Last Airbender, and man was it breathtaking. From the sublime backdrops to the vibrant color palettes, everything just seemed to vibe in this yet-to-be-explored territory.

Presentation aside, though, this episode was packed with great story, and it wasn't long before we got a good sense of where "A New Spiritual Age" was heading. Not surprisingly, it only took about a minute for Korra to upset some spirits -- in this case, prairie dog spirits -- whereas Jinora had few problems adjusting to her new environment, instead focusing on the task at hand. Thus, a divide was made, leading our heroines down two very different paths. For Korra, this meant a spiritual journey to maximizing her inner light -- and who better to guide her than a certain "Dragon of the West," the original Iroh!

The Starving Games Review
Nov 9th 2013, 03:34, by Max Nicholson

When it comes to directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer -- the guys behind feature "gems" like Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie and Vampires Suck -- you probably already know what you're getting into with their latest flick The Starving Games. Honestly, it's a wonder these two guys are still making anything at all, let alone another spoof movie -- and yet here they are with a sendup of the 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games.

Like Friedberg and Seltzer's previous efforts, The Starving Games is entirely made up of gross-out humor and one-note pop culture references, all strung together to make -- well, not so much a "film" as "83 minutes of terrible things happening on a screen." But for the sake of clarity, the story centers on teenager Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh), who bravely takes the place of her younger sister in a televised fight to the death called The Starving Games -- an admitted ripoff of Running Man and Battle Royale, according to Diedrich Bader's villainous President Snowballs. Joining Kantmiss is Peter Malarkey (Cody Christian), a dimwitted baker's son who also volunteers to compete, in a foolish attempt to get closer to Kantmiss. The grand prize for winning this tournament? An old ham, a coupon to Subway and... a partially eaten pickle.

Blizzard CEO: WoW 'Still Has a Long Future Ahead'
Nov 9th 2013, 03:39, by Andrew Goldfarb

Following the opening ceremony at BlizzCon today, IGN spoke with Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime about what's next for World of Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm, plus how the rest of Blizzard's franchises are poised to continue evolving.

"I think that WoW still has a long future ahead of itself," Morhaime told IGN. "I think it's really up to us to continue looking at ways to keep the gameplay feeling fresh and new. Adding new things to the game. Making the game more accessible for not only new players, but also players that played WoW at one point in time, and want to come back. I think maybe an unintended consequence of adding all of this content is that when you layer in complexity and add new things, the people who aren't keeping up with all of that feel like they're getting further and further behind."

Ridley Scott Planning to Tackle the NFL?
Nov 9th 2013, 01:50, by Adam DiLeo

As if filming a sprawling biblical epic wasn't enough to keep him busy, Ridley Scott is already laying the groundwork for a new project about the devastating aftereffects of concussions on professional football players.

Scott is still in the middle of principle photography on Exodus, which stars Christian Bale as Moses along with Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton. But that hasn't stopped the director and his producing partner, Giannina Facio, from meeting with "A-list writers for what he hopes will be his next project."

Path of Exile Review
Nov 9th 2013, 01:16, by Leif Johnson

I flinched as a white pufferfish man attacked me by hurling blood, and it wasn't even its own. Moments before, it had sprinted past me to munch on a pile of zombie corpses I'd left in my wake, and then it came back to drown me in their entrails. I'd seen hints of it before, but this grotesque creature and its legion of cohorts served as the first definitive indicator that I was venturing into far darker territory than I'd seen in other contemporary action-RPGs like Diablo III and Torchlight 2. I realized then, too, that I wished to end the existence of such vile things, and I was pleased to find that Path of Exile usually made it fun to do so.

Had I not looked it up, I'm not sure I could have told you where all this was taking place. Path of Exile has an overarching story, but its lush graphics and grisly combat overshadow it so thoroughly that you'll only pick it up by paying close attention to quest givers and lore objects. This is Wraeclast, a dumping ground of sorts for criminals and other unsavory types, namely the seven unfortunately gender-locked starter classes you see trapped on a prison ship on the title screen. (I like to think of it as Robert E. Howard's take on Australia.) Even so, key moments manage to assert themselves. The voice acting is up to par, and one interlude that plunges the otherwise sunny world into darkness seems like a delightfully cheeky rebuke to players who click on objects without bothering to learn about their significance first.

How Heroes of the Storm 'Challenges the Genre'
Nov 9th 2013, 01:44, by Mitch Dyer

Blizzard wants Heroes of the Storm matches to last 20 minutes, a panel of developers said during a BlizzCon 2013 presentation. In discussing how their upcoming MOBA challenges the norms of the genre. The team also detailed other notable features, including mounts with mobility bonuses, and playful character skins (Diablo + Murloc, Warcraft Heroes in StarCraft armor).

Additionally, teams earn levels in unison rather than individual characters leveling up. Blizzard also showed dedicated support Heroes, who aren't built to kill -- in the case of Abathur, who hides behind his team's gate, there are no abilities except support skills.

Blizzard also noted that Heroes of the Storm's maps will focus on its objectives, and won't feature traditional three-lane MOBA maps without them. Game director Dustin Browder doesn't expect these changes to disrupt high-level competitive play in Heroes of the Storm.

The Best Graphics Cards Under $300
Nov 9th 2013, 01:00, by Alex Rubens

If you're just getting into building a gaming PC, it can be difficult to find the best graphics cards within a certain budget, especially when most of the current talk is surrounding whatever high-end cards are being announced at the time. We chose five of the best graphics cards for under $300 to help make that selection process a bit easier.

760

It might look like an Italian race car, but underneath its flash exterior, the MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 is pure power. Rocking two DVI ports, an HDMI port, and one DisplayPort, the GTX 760 has everything you need to power a three monitor ultimate gaming setup. It's powerful enough to run just about everything out there today on High and two can be placed in an SLI configuration for even more power. Despite its budget price point, the GTX 760 is showing some serious firepower with 2GB GDDR5 video memory to show off your games looking their best. Beware though, if you have a smaller case, MSI's GTX 760 might be a tight fit, as it clocks in at 10.24" x 4.96" x 1.50", which is slightly larger than the other options out there.

Not only does it look like Nightwing is indeed going to be in Batman vs. Superman, but the actor to play him may have been found. The Wrap is reporting that Adam Driver, best known for his role on HBO's Girls, is the frontrunner to play Dick Grayson / Nightwing in the superhero crossover film. The Wrap cites "two individuals familiar with the project" as their source, noting Warner Bros. has no comment. However, they add it's not a done deal and there are at least two other actors still in contention for the role as well, according to one of their sources.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games Review
Nov 9th 2013, 00:47, by Scott Thompson

I still feel like I'm watching fan fiction scribbled in the back of my old elementary school notebook come to life every time I see Mario and Sonic running amok together, but the unlikely duo's biannual Olympic series never really plays out the way I'd pictured it. This year's Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games makes excellent use of Wii U's online capabilities and is overflowing with unlockable fan service, but yet again, it fails to ditch the incessant, imprecise motion control that have been an unfortunate series staple.

Sochi 2014 features 18 different events; 10 are inspired by real-life Olympic events, like figure skating, hockey, and snowboarding, and eight fantastical "Dream Events," which include snowball fights, Bullet Bill sledge racing, and a curling-inspired golf game. 18 events sounds like a lot, but I found that the majority of them play near-identically because of the simple motion control required in all but two of them. Whether skiing, snowboarding, riding in a bobsled, or ice skating, the goal in each is usually to reach the bottom of the course the fastest, and you get there by tilting the GamePad or Wii Remote Plus. It grew monotonous quickly.

The Best External Hard Drives
Nov 9th 2013, 00:40, by Alex Rubens

When it comes to personal files and important family memories, you can never be too careful. Most people don't think of backing up their files until something important has already been lost, or even if they do, they don't choose a drive that can stand the test of time. Here's five of our favorite external hard drives, both portable and non-portable.

BUFFALO

Easily the most highly recommended external hard drive on the internet, BUFFALO's DriveStation might look like a simple, black and square external hard drive, but there's something much more sinister inside that proves just how misleading visual impressions can be. Underneath the basic exterior is a fast 3TB hard drive paired with 1GB of DRM cache that provides SSD-like speeds, tallying nearly 408MB/s, more than double standard USB 3.0 speeds. The DriveStation isn't a portable hard drive, but rather requires AC power and should be used in a more traditional backup or media production environment. It even comes with built-in software that allows you to schedule backups, making it easy to set it up and forget about it, knowing that your files will be safe in the event of an emergency. If you require encryption, it has both password protection and software data encryption, so you're good all around.

PlayStation 3 players will be able to transfer their character data to Diablo III and Diablo III: Reaper of Souls on PlayStation 4, Blizzard has confirmed.

Game director Josh Mosqueira explained "we're still figuring it out" in terms of how the expansion pack will be distributed on PlayStation 4 -- he did not specify whether existing users will receive a discount, or whether Diablo 3 will be required to play it, but reassured players that their characters would make the leap between generations.

Mosqueira also said that Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls on PS4 will run at 1080p and 60 frames per-second.

Dota 2 'Diretide' Event Coming in Next Update
Nov 9th 2013, 01:06, by Brian Albert

Valve has announced that the Dota 2 Halloween event, Diretide, is coming in the next update.

Diretide 2012 was Dota 2's first seasonal event, and it was well received by players. When Halloween rolled around this year, the event was nowhere to be seen, and Valve disappointed fans by saying nothing about its absence.

"Whenever we make a significant mistake, we spend a bunch of time looking at what happened, why it happened, and how we can fix it," reads the Dota 2 blog. "We didn't ship a Diretide event this year, and you were rightly upset about it. That was clearly a mistake, and then we compounded the problem by not telling you what was going on."

The Best Universal Remotes
Nov 9th 2013, 00:33, by Alex Rubens

With more devices flooring their way into our living rooms, it can be easy to become inundated with remotes. A universal remote can cut down on remote clutter while also making things more simple and intuitive. However, they can be expensive and there's some real duds out there, so we broke down the five best universal/smart remotes below.

harmonyone

Often considered the gold standard in universal remotes for years now, The Logitech Harmony One is the perfect example of when a universal remote becomes a smart remote. The Harmony One claims "endless entertainment control", which is something that it lives up to completely. Its biggest plus is the one-touch controls which allows you to program complex actions for the remote to execute with a simple press of the touch screen. If you want to play Xbox 360, one press of your remote can have everything setup without any additional input required. It can turn on your TV and audio receiver, select the proper inputs on both, and turn on your Xbox 360. It's brilliant and shines throughout.

The Best Gaming PCs for Under $1000
Nov 9th 2013, 00:19, by Alex Rubens

If you aren't interested in next-generation consoles, but want to be able to experience all the new games in their full glory, getting a gaming PC might be your best option. It's more expensive, but sales and discounts online make it balance out in the end. Here's five of the best gaming PCs for under $1000.

asus

It might not look too different from the standard desktop tower PCs you see in most office buildings, but underneath the bland case of the Asus M51AC is an outstandingly powerful gaming rig that's more than suitable for the cost. Inside, the M51AC has a 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7-4770, 16GB DDR3 memory, a 1TB 7200RPM HDD, and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. Unfortunately, squeezing that amount of powerful components in there for such a low pre-built price means that there isn't much else. There's no built-in WiFi or bluetooth, which isn't a dealbreaker but would be nice out of the box. There also isn't much in the way of upgradability, which leave you stuck if you plan on upgrading in the future, but if you're content with the power now, then the M51AC is a great box.

Diablo 3 Not Getting an Offline Mode
Nov 9th 2013, 00:29, by Mitch Dyer

Diablo III on PC won't be getting an offline mode, according to game director Josh Mosqueira. Answering a question during a BlizzCon 2013 Q&A, he responded, "So here's the thing. When we decided to design Diablo III, we feel...that Diablo plays best when you're playing with your friends, when you have access to this awesome community that is Blizzard."

Mosqueira and his team emphasized that they're adding even more multiplayer features to Diablo III with a new clan system in Reaper of Souls. "We felt it was important for you to have that social connection," Mosqueira added.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls' New Adventure Mode Revealed
Nov 9th 2013, 00:03, by Mitch Dyer

Blizzard has unveiled Adventure Mode for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. Adventure mode is the "endgame for everyone," which takes advantage of various aspects of Diablo III Blizzard didn't take complete advantage of during the campaign. The mentality is that you can "go anywhere, slay anything" in a mode that better leverages the randomization of enemy spawning and dungeon layouts, now with added quests.

Bounties in Adventure Mode assign you 25 tasks, five for each of Reaper of Souls' acts, that have you hunting unique enemies, killing bosses, clearing dungeons, and finishing other events, like the Last Stand of the Ancients quest. You can explore any act, any waypoint, at any time, while exploring Nephelem Rifts -- areas which throw modified enemies into new randomized dungeons in locations you'd normally never see them.

The Best HDTVs for Gaming
Nov 9th 2013, 00:04, by Alex Rubens

Planning on doing the majority of your gaming from a couch? You might need to upgrade your HDTV then. Significant advances in the last few years have made LED and Plasma the preferred choice for gaming. Here are some of the best with features specifically geared towards gaming.

panasonic

Don't worry, Plasma HDTVs have come a long way since the days of burn-in. That doesn't happen anymore. Instead, you're just left with darker black levels without any of the hassle. This 50-inch (also available in 60 and 65-inch) plasma HDTV is among the best available and features a 600Hz refresh rate with extremely low display lag. It comes with built-in Wireless LAN, allowing you to connect to the internet for online streaming services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant Video without the need of additional hardware. That's important too, as the TC-P50S60 only has two HDMI ports, making them all the more vital if you don't have a receiver to manage ports with. Most of all, the large screen size makes it perfect for sitting back on the couch without having to worry about missing any details. Sadly, Panasonic's plasma lines will soon go the way of the dinosaur, as the company has announced it is discontinuing all plasma display production, so if you want one, act fast.
