The Swapper: Review
Jun 1st 2013, 00:19

My heart aches for so many different reasons every time I solve a puzzle in The Swapper. The first time I softened what would've been a fatal fall by creating a copy of myself at the last minute and swapping my consciousness into it was absolutely revelatory. Watching the body that I'd inhabited just moments before crumble onto a lifeless heap as it hit the ground gave me pause in a way that few games ever do. Were these copies simply lifeless tools with the sole purpose of helping me overcome a challenge? Or was I actively murdering countless versions of myself in cold blood? Or is it suicide?

That's the big question that arose as I spent about four hours (excluding the time I got stuck) solving a series of puzzles and piecing together the profound and well-told story of a derelict space station. Though The Swapper's cloning mechanic brings to mind games like Braid and Closure, it differentiates itself by giving you your one and only puzzle-solving tool right at the start. The titular gun that allows you to create copies of yourself and swap places with them is relatively simplistic in its singular function, but developer Facepalm Games' uncanny ability to continually put us in foreign predicaments vaults The Swapper into the ranks of the elite puzzlers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Boldest Marvel Movie?
Jun 1st 2013, 00:07

A few months ago, I excitedly posted a Hero Worship column about Robert Redford being cast in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, calling it "one of the greatest things

to superheroes." While I maintain that sentiment, my mind was once again blown apart by the latest Guardians of the Galaxy casting news, in which Glenn Close reportedly joined the cast as, get this, the leader of the Nova Corps.

Forget the fact that we're going to get a Nova Corps in the same movie as a badass gun-toting raccoon, but the idea that an actor like Close is in the same movie as former WWE Superstar Batista is enough to melt brains. Not that the crop of actors in Marvel Phase One were unremarkable, but it's interesting to watch the paradigm shift from the "type" of actors that make appearances in these movies. I suppose the precedent was set, to a degree, with Marlon Brando in Superman: The Movie, but even then that was nothing more than a glorified cameo with no repeat performance.

When he burst onto the scene with The Sixth Sense in 1999, M. Night Shyamalan was widely regarded as one of the most promising new directors in Hollywood. Unfortunately, his career since has been a rocky one, resulting in successes like Unbreakable and critical and commercial duds like The Happening.

Here's Heath Ledger's Dark Knight Joker Diary
May 31st 2013, 23:17

A new video has emerged which spotlights the late Heath Ledger's Joker "diary" that he used while prepping to make The Dark Knight.

We'd heard about such a diary before. Ledger told Empire the following back in 2007: "I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices -- it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath -- someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts. He's just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown, and Chris

Is Killzone Mercenary the Portable Shooter We Deserve?
May 31st 2013, 23:06

Two simple facts about Killzone Mercenary must be stated before diving into this preview. First and foremost, it's quite possibly the best looking handheld game I've ever played. Guerilla Cambridge has managed to somehow replicate the visual and audio fidelity of the PS3 installment on the Vita. And second, Mercenary is already leagues better than previous high-profile Vita shooters like Resistance: Burning Skies and Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified.

The mission I got to play involved infiltrating an open-air enemy fortress precariously built along the side of a mountain. As I stealthily made my way through the compound, I was accompanied by a child companion who provided a nice dose of Short Round-esque levity to the situation. Guerilla promises that the story delves into the gray areas of soldiers of fortune, but I certainly didn't get any of that from the chapter I played.

How Much Will Xbox One and PS4 Cost?
May 31st 2013, 01:55

Retailers have begun to list prices for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, possibly suggesting the price range we can expect when both consoles are released later this year.

It's not uncommon for sites to use placeholder prices in order to accept pre-orders, but the timing suggests that retailers are preparing for Sony and Microsoft to announce official price points at E3 next month. For now, none of the following prices are confirmed.

Amazon's UK site lists £599.99 (roughly $912) for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, separate from the €599.99 (roughly $781) price point on Amazon.de (though, as seen below, that site previously had a price of €999.99 - roughly $1300). Meanwhile, Zavvi lists both consoles at £399.99 (roughly $607).

Does TDKR's Ending Make Legal Sense?
May 31st 2013, 01:13

One of the appeals of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was its attempt to place the story of Batman in a "real-world" setting. But of course, if you look at the film too closely, it's not all that real-world (what Hollywood film is?). And now some fans who apparently have a bit of legal expertise have decided to examine the end of the trilogy, specifically the finale of The Dark Knight Rises, to see if it all adds up.

Of course, spoilers follow, in case you have somehow made it this far and not yet seen the film. But are clicking on articles about its ending.

Anyway, the main question at hand here is why would Bruce Wayne be legally declared dead at the end of the story? We obviously see (or think we see) Batman get blown to bits, but what about the missing Mr. Wayne? As far as the general public knows, Bruce did not sacrifice himself in the Bat via nuclear explosion.
