Sharlto Copley to Star in Neill Blomkamp's Next Sci-fi
May 1st 2013, 02:04

District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp will reunite with star Sharlto Copley for a third time.

Copley will take the lead role in Blomkamp's third sci-fi feature, Chappie, described cryptically by Blomkamp as a "sci-fi comedy" featuring a "ridiculous robot" with an "unusual setting." Details on the film are otherwise under wraps.

Up next for the pair is Blomkamp's second feature Elysium, which is shaping up very nicely indeed.

Which Girls Star is Up for Fantastic Four Reboot?
May 1st 2013, 01:06

One of HBO's Girls is reportedly in the running to star in Fox's Fantastic Four reboot.

Deadline claims that Allison Williams, who plays Marnie Michaels on the hit series, is "on the short list for the Fantastic Four reboot, which is in the very early talking stage."

It would stand to reason the role she's up for would be that of Susan Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, played in the previous films by Jessica Alba.

Gearbox, SEGA Sued Over Aliens: Colonial Marines
May 1st 2013, 01:08

A class action lawsuit has been filed against SEGA and Gearbox regarding Aliens: Colonial Marines. In a lawsuit obtained by Polygon, plaintiff Damion Perrine claims "that Gearbox and Sega falsely advertised Aliens by showing demos at trade shows like PAX and E3 which didn't end up being accurate representations of the final product."

The demos were advertised as "actual gameplay" at the time, yet portrayed a level of "graphical fidelity, AI behavior and even entire levels not featured in the game." The suit explains that by having reviews under an embargo that lifted the day of release, consumers did not have time to learn from critics about the difference in quality in the final product compared to early footage.

The Americans: Don't Miss the Season Finale
May 1st 2013, 00:01

Along with Hannibal, The Americans has easily been my favorite new series this year. The tale of two KGB spies living in 1981 suburban America, posing as an average married couple, the show has deftly managed to blend engaging family drama with some very intense spy-thriller storylines.

I attended a screening of this coming Wednesday night's season finale of The Americans this past weekend, and am happy to report it delivers big time. The stakes are considerably high, with two huge scenarios occurring nearly simultaneously that put Phillip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) in greater danger than ever. Per usual, the finale impresses by juggling so many elements in so many engrossing ways, as we're just as worried about the Jennings' marriage as we are their cover being blown.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Review - Xbox 360
Apr 30th 2013, 23:33

There aren't many surprise successes anymore in the risk-averse world of console gaming, but last year Dragon's Dogma was one of them. It's an ambitious action-RPG with an excellent combat system, a great sense of adventure, and a suite of technical foibles that make it harder to love than it should be. But at this lower price and with many extra hours of late-game content, which show off the abilities of one of Capcom's most talented in-house development teams in a new context, Dragon's Dogma is considerably more attractive this time around.

Dark Arisen includes the full version of Dragon's Dogma – with a few minor adjustments – as well as a good 10 to 15 hours of new adventuring on a mysterious black island that rises from the sea outside the fishing village of Cassardis. Don't be fooled by its starting-area placement, though; the new content is very much designed for the post-game, and if you don't carry over a high-level save file from the original Dragon's Dogma you'll get slayed. Actually, even if you're high-level you're still very likely to get slayed; Bitterblack Isle's difficulty sometimes threatens to cross the line between fist-eatingly tough and just plain unfair. That said, I enjoy that type of challenge, even though luck sometimes seems to have more to do with my success than skill.

The UK's Official Nintendo Magazine published an interview with Nintendo's Hiro Yamada about Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and other select titles. But embedded in there is word on when we may finally hear about Retro Studios' still-unknown Wii U exclusive.

When Donkey Kong Country Returns was released on Wii in 2010, it was the very first time Retro Studios walked away from the Metroid Prime series. The magazine's interviewer therefore asked a rather obvious question about the 3DS port of the game: why isn't Retro making it? "Does

Capcom has advised gamers that a new update for Dragon's Dogma could corrupt files and prevent data from being saved or loaded. According to a post on Capcom Unity, a new title update could cause the problem for Dragon's Dogma and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen players.

"A number of users have encountered an unforeseen issue with a recent downloadable Title Update (patch)," Capcom advised. "The TU, in some cases, has caused players' DD save data to become corrupted (cue Olra purification jokes), meaning the game will no longer save or load their game progress."

EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi says a fourth entry in the series isn't happening. The news comes via a Tweet from Itoi, who responded to a fan asking about Mother 4 by simply saying "impossible."

For anyone confused, the EarthBound series is known as "Mother" in Japan (EarthBound was released there as Mother 2), though EarthBound is the only entry ever to be officially released in the West. Having trouble keeping up with Chris Hardwick? You're not alone. The popular podcaster and stand-up comedian now has – at least – three shows in production or in development at three different networks. AMC is developing the YouTube-based series All Star Celebrity Bowling as a television show as a part of an overall deal they have with Hardwick's Nerdist Industries, and Hardwick already hosts Talking Dead, the Walking Dead aftershow for the network. Over on BBC America, Hardwick recently began hosting a full season of a television version of the comedian's original podcast, The Nerdist.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

When actor James Purefoy told me, in this IGN interview which posted yesterday, that creator Kevin Williamson intended to "keep the hook planted firmly in the upper lip" of the audience at the end of "The Final Chapter," I never realized that that meant having our hero and his one true love both being stabbed in his kitchen. I took it to mean that we'd be left with a tease of what might happen in Season 2. Silly me. Because why not stab someone in the gut when their gut is just so damned stabable?

In a chat with The Guardian (via Yahoo! Movies UK), the Oscar-winning Mendes said, "Was I willing to go back into a room with a writer and start work on the same set of characters and the same scenarios as I've been working on for the last three years? The idea made me physically ill."

The Bond producers, however, have publicly stated they remain confident they can woo Mendes back for another Bond movie down the line.

Defiance: "The Devil in the Dark" Review
Apr 30th 2013, 02:00

Warning: full episode spoilers follow.

Three episodes in, my overall opinion of Defiance hasn't changed much from the pilot. The series benefits from a strong premise and interesting world, but apart from a handful of standout characters, the majority of the cast are dull and two-dimensional. And though "The Devil in the Dark" offered some solid character growth for Irisa and her fellow Irathients, the rest of Defiance's residents suffered through a pretty quiet installment.

My favorite scene in this episode was actually the opening one. Seeing the jogger lovingly caress his carefully maintained tennis shoes and attempt something as normal and mundane as jogging in this post-apocalyptic landscape really painted a picture of the world in a way epic battles and and shots of alien technology simply don't.  Defiance is often at its best when the show allows the visuals and facial work alone to tell the story. Like this shot, for instance:
