Though billed as a Rotworld epilogue, Swamp Thing #18 is more the true conclusion to that crossover storyline as Swamp Thing confronts the Arcane family one final time. This also happens to be Scott Snyder's final issue of the series. It actually functions better as a coda to Snyder's entire run than it does to Rotworld. Though enjoyable, the crossover ultimately felt too drawn out and meandering for its own good. Even though he was positioned as the big villain of the piece, Arcane feels like little more than an afterthought in issue #18. A lot of Rotworld has proved to be more of a means to an end as far as Swamp Thing is concerned.
But in terms of exploring the relationship between Abigail and Alec, Snyder delivers some strong, emotionally-charged work in this finale. There's a grim sense of finality to their encounter here, tinged with both sadness and an optimism for the future of both characters. As a love story, Snyder's run has consistently hit all the high notes. There's also an appreciable sense of symmetry to this issue as Snyder mirrors a lot of the material he worked with in the early issues, right down to the title "Lay Down Them Bones."
