Red Widow: Series Premiere Review

Note: While Red Widow is airing its first two episodes back-to-back Sunday night, this review is for the first episode only. Minor spoilers from the episode to follow.

Developed by writer and first-time showrunner Melissa Rosenberg (whose varied resume includes writing for Dexter for that show's first four seasons and writing all five Twilight films), ABC's midseason thriller Red Widow, about a woman who ends up working in organized crime, attempts to reel the viewer in with a sexy premise, an attractive cast and a gritty San Francisco backdrop. Unfortunately, beyond that, it fails to come up with anything wholly original or particularly compelling.

The story centers on Marta Walraven (Rhada Mitchell), a stay-at-home mother with familial ties to the Russian mob. While she herself is reluctant to get involved with the family business, her criminal husband Evan (Hell on Wheels star Anson Mount) gets in over his head when he and Marta's brother Irwin (Wil Traval) decide to steal $1.5 million-worth of drugs from a notorious kingpin known as Schiller (Goran Visnjic). This eventually costs Evan his life, leaving Marta and her three children to fend for themselves. With few other options in sight, Marta decides that she must pick up where Evan left off and repay Schiller for her husband's misdeeds.
