Sam Raimi's visually lush and fantastical Oz the Great and Powerful tells the origins of not just the wizard, but of the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. The wizard serves as our entry point into the story and magical world, but he is also the catalyst for the witch's transformation - and it is her story that truly brings something new to the table.
We've seen many rebooted or otherwise re-imagined versions of L. Frank Baum's imaginative world – both before and after the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. For its part, Oz the Great and Powerful acts as a prequel to Baum's original tale, and the movie that is most often associated with it. The film follows the story of the selfish, womanizing, ego-maniacal Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small town magician in a traveling circus who dreams of greatness. Oz, as a whole, explores the idea of what it is to be a great man - or woman, for that matter.
