Last night's Once Upon a Time took us to the past but not the fairy tale land past we're used to visiting. We went back to 1983 and watched the curse roll in like a storm and saw how Storybrooke is created out of thin air. The interesting flashback showed how Regina controlled everyone from the beginning and why that pushed her to become a mother.
It was a refreshing change not to visit fairy tale world. Those memories should be used with a light hand instead of being in every single episode and keeping it all in the real world was less jarring. And it was cool to see the beginning and how the stranger – Greg Mendell – is connected to the town. He and his father witnessed the curse create the town and though you'd think Regina would kill them for being there, she goes down a twisted path instead.
