Already Season 8 of Supernatural has been a big improvement over the previous year or two, and this week's discovery by Kevin of specific tasks that needed to be done in order to close the gates of hell kept up the momentum. With the last two episodes opening up the series in new ways by introducing the Men of Letters, getting this year's season-long storyline moving with the three trials was a smart development.
Dean was especially excited to have a plan, so much so that he talked about killing a hellhound as if it wouldn't be that much of a problem. I had to pause for a minute and remember that it was hellhounds who killed Dean in the Season 3 finale; it would have been nice to have a little more trepidation on Dean's part when it came to hunting one down on purpose. That aside, it was still fun to see Dean bursting with so much excitement to have a goal. Meanwhile, Sam took the more cautious route, worried about Kevin pushing himself too far. Seeing the state Kevin was in, it was a valid concern.
