If we're being totally honest, today's news comes as a bit of a shock. Not because Sony has decided to stop producing MiniDisc devices after March 2013, but rather, it's the idea anyone is still using a MiniDisc. According to BBC News, Sony will manufacture the final MiniDisc stereo systems next month.
The MiniDisc, like so many forgotten media formats, had a hard time catching on globally. Back in 1992, the MiniDisc seemed like a promising way to record audio with long-lasting clarity, in comparison to the ever-degrading cassette tape. Still, the rise of the CD-R -- and ultimately, MP3 -- would overshadow Sony's little plastic-shielded disc everywhere but Japan.
