Finally, a Marvel book that gels perfectly with Nick Spencer's mind-bending writing sensibilities. This team of Secret Avengers -- just Hawkeye and Black Widow for now -- has been recruited by Agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. to go on missions so secret that they require the heroes to have regular mind wipes. A lot of times when Spencer does a last page cliffhanger, I'm not sure what I just read, but here he nails it with a twist that'll have you pre-ordering Secret Avengers #2 the second you see it.

Even though this is a book that operates in the shadows and all that, Spencer keeps it fun and energetic. Hawkeye will have you chuckling as he quips at the bad guys despite being fatally wounded. Black Widow earns a laugh herself, but otherwise her characterization is lacking in comparison to the rest of the cast. As it stands, Hawkeye hogs the spotlight, so fleshing her out would have given the book more balance.
