Warning: full spoilers follow...
Andy went off to sail the high seas and find himself seven episodes ago, apparently what he found was an a**hole. The character seems to have ingested an evil elixir while he was away, and has reverted back to far-worse-than original form. Lest we forget, Andy wasn't always the vulnerable and well-intentioned goof-ball, turned boss that the show eventually crafted him into as a stand-in/replacement for Michael Scott. He was initially a funny, but not always likable, foil for Jim with anger management issues.
It is episodes like this one where The Office really demonstrates a tendency to, with the exception of a sacred few, treat characters as plot devices. I'm not refereeing to boom-guy-obvious-plot-driver Brian, here. Andy has been, for the most part somewhat subtly, crafted into whatever the show needed him to be to keep the story moving over the years.
