Katana branches out from Birds of Prey with her own solo title penned by current Catwoman scribe Ann Nocenti and the issue is an uneven journey through a veritable garden of cultural stereotypes and curiously paced plot lines. Though one gets the feeling that the creative team has put their best forward, the end result leaves something to be desired for fans of the sword-building Tatsu.
It must be noted that there are precious few books on the market with female leads at the helm and even fewer feature decent characters whose racial identification is anything but white. It's inarguably significant that a character like Katana has been given a solo title, but it's a shame that Nocenti relies heavily on tired stereotypes about Japanese culture to propel the narrative. It's a move that provides little insight into the inner workings of the character of Katana and it ultimately leaves the story feeling more than a little anemic.
