Jon Shafer was lead designer and principal programmer for Firaxis' Civilization V. He went to Stardock Entertainment for a couple of years and has now decided to strike out on his own. His newly founded studio, Conifer Games, has just announced its first project: a turn-based strategy game titled At the Gates.
Working with a tiny staff of less than five people, Shafer knows that he can't make something as ambitious as Civilization. Thus, while At the Gates very obviously draws from the legendary strategy series, Shafer's keeping it focused. It's only single-player, and only takes place during the relatively short period where the Eastern and Western Roman Empires were slowly losing ground to the encroaching barbarians (late fourth century AD).
