Let's dive right into the deep end: If you haven't seen End of Watch, you should. I admit that the idea of a gritty "found footage"-style movie about the LAPD seemed needlessly gimmicky to me, but after about 10 minutes, one pretty much just forgets that Jake Gyllenhaal's patrolman Brain Taylor started off the story with the distracting contrivance of filming everyone in his downtown LA-adjacent precinct.
From there, this movie, which is first and foremost about the friendship between Taylor and his partner Mike "Z" Zavala (Michael Peña), plays out episodically, as if your watching webisodes about these two hotshot officers as they bust criminals, investigate kidnappings, rush into burning buildings and, in Taylor's case, fall in love and enter a serious relationship with anna Kendrick's Janet. Oh yeah, and along the way the duo's over-eagerness on the job gets them targeted for death by a Mexican cartel.
