When you read as many superhero comics as I do, it's easy to become bored of the usual comic book story structure. That's why books that try something different instantly earn a tip of my cap. When those same books manage to weave in meaningful emotions, it's something to get excited about.
Large crossover events tend to drag because they involve so many episodes with familiar storytelling profiles. Lately, the Big 2 – and DC in particular – have inundated their readers with large crossover stories. Writer Peter Tomasi breaks with the status quo in Batman and Robin, choosing instead to explore his character's innermost hopes and concerns through a rolling narrative. The result is a tale that is alternately creepy, cathartic, and heartwarming.
