The Americans: "In Control" Review

This was a notable episode of The Americans, involving the first big real life "event" the show has used (though I'm guessing not the last), as Elizabeth and Phillip found everything in turmoil in the wake of the assassination attempt on President Reagan. In the process, "In Control" managed to once more skillfully blend the Jennings' spy life and marital life into one highly dramatic mixture.

One thing to really admire on The Americans is just how smart nearly all the characters are. Look at the situation with Nina. When she makes up an excuse to leave the embassy, her boss doesn't just buy it – he sends someone to tail her. But then, in turn, Stan and Chris were smart enough to notice someone watching her and not give away anything… at least yet. These people are all involved in the spy game and all savvy enough to not make rookie mistakes and it's a pleasure to watch characters not just screw up to service the story.
